Search phrases such as, 'colonial literature' to find articles, primary source documents (such as examples of writing from the period), and images.

Use this database to find out information about specific people. This is also a good source for pictures.

This is a rather high level source for literary criticism and primary sources, but it also contains overviews which will give you an idea of how a particular author or a piece of their work fits into the history of American literature. Pay attention to the tabs when searching to narrow your results.
